It's Sew Mama Sew giveaway day! This is a great way to discover new blogs and of course get in to win some great prizes. Make sure you pop over to Sew Mama Sew to check out everyone who has linked up a giveaway.
This time around I'm giving away this bundle of fabrics which is co-ordinated around this totally awesome bee hexagon print which I got from Stitchbird this weekend. You'll get a quarter of a yard of each fabric, but some piece will be fat quarters and some width of fabric cuts.
The giveaway will stay open until around 6pm Sunday May 18 2014 (New Zealand Time), and I will use the random number generator at random.org to pick a winner then. Good luck everyone!
By the way, I usually respond to all comments, but giveaways can be a little overwhelming, so I hope you don't mind if I don't respond to your comment on this post.

UPDATE - THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED - THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED <

If you've made a mistake, seam rip it, then go for a break, 10 minutes or so. Relax and then when you return you will be more focussed and concentrate better to get it done right!
When machine quilting, a little beer makes the stitches smoother. :)
Finished is better than perfect! Working on it.....
And now a follower too - very impressive body of work! You really have an eye for colour.
Measure twice, cut once
No quilt is perfect, they are made to be loved and used so enjoy the process and learn from your mistakes.
Measure twice, cut once!
If you don't care, it's not worth fixing!
Following you on Bloglovin'.
The best tip was measure twice, cut once!
My current favorite tip is chain piecing. It appeals to my thrifty side by saving both time and thread. Thanks!
Best quilt tip ever... relax, enjoy, and be thankful that God made seam rippers.

That pressing seams and clipping corners can make all the difference!

I like the way of making four HSTs by sewing two squares together around all four edges and cutting across the m diagonally each way :)
Pressing each seam as you go! That has made all the difference in my piecing.
The best tip I have ever gotten is to do whatever you can with the time you have. Doing a little bit at a time is better than not doing at all. daydreamhouse at hotmail dot com.

For me, the best quilt tip I've ever been given was Don't use steam when pressing. Solved all my beginner problems way back when.
Use a small hook crochet hook to knot thread, push fabric through a machine, grab threads by the needle (my fingers have a hard time - the hook works great), turn corners inside out, pull out lint balls, etc. 24Tangent "at" gmail "dot" com
Pin, pin, and pin some more! :)

Wine always helps when attempting to FMQ :). Thanks for a great giveaway!
Taking the extra time to match up your piecing perfectly is totally worth it in the end!

Best quilting tip I ever rec was to invest in a good rotary cutter and mat.
Measure twice cut once!
Barb@Witsend
The best quilting tip I've been given was to pin my points that I want to match up, and work from the middle out. That way I can fudge what doesn't want to fit in nicely. :)
The best advice I have is to try. Practice does make perfect. Take your time and attempt all the cool things you want.
just in case: m3reyna at gmail dot com
to steam when you have a whack-load of seams!
the best tip i ever got is to IRON! but uuuuuhg, i don't want to! that may be one of the biggest reasons i don't quilt much... too much ironing.
Great give away. Thanks so much for sharing Measure twice, cut once...
I always have to remind myself to press my seams even if I'm in a rush!
I'm a new follower through bloglovin - I love your color stories!
Just keep moving on and don't get obsessed with tiny mistakes. They go unnoticed when the quilt is done!
I ' man old Bloglovin follower!
The best advice I've ever gotten is to take your time while basting and buy a new seam ripper every so often :) Thanks for the great giveaway!
i'm a follower! :)
best tip.... don't worry about little mistakes - if you can't see it from 5 feet away it won't matter.
1/4 inch foot Smcalli102@aol.com
Do not cut or sew anything new when you are overtired!
To shorten my stitches when piecing small pieces. It helps them go together better for some reason.
A new follower, but I first noticed you when you posted about Ivy and the thread.
Pin, pin pin!

Don't obsess about making it perfect--just do it! Especially true for free motion quilting.
I am a follower via Bloglovin'. Thanks! notwendy gmail
The best two tips I was given was use starch before you cut fabric and glue your seams before sewing. My points are nice and sharp even though I am very new to quilting.
To change your needle often!
Read the instructions through before you start cutting!
Happy follower!
To use a walking foot. I love how it handles layers of fabric much better, I rarely take it off nowadays. Thanks for the giveaway!
keep the iron on!
emmevon(at)gmail(dot)com
Spray glue basting!!
Cute fabric! My tip is to starch before cutting fabric and to press, not iron.

Don't drop your feed dogs when FMQ. Instead cover them up somehow.
The best tip I ever got was: If you aren't satisfied with your work, redo it only once and no more. It is too hard on the fabric to keep reworking it. And... usually I follow this advice!
measure twice, cut once, i run that litany in my head the whole time. lol

To set your seams before pressing open
To use a 1/4 inch foot.
Never rip yourself - use a seam ripper. You definitely need a thread cutter by your machine. Just love your fabric. Everyone of us needs and wants fabric so every piece helps. Thank you for being a part of Sew Mama Sew giveaway and giving us the chance to win.

Cute fabrics! I was advised to use a good sewing machine, so I bought a Bernina. Love that machine!
If you aren't putting it in a contest, enjoy the process and don't look to close at others work.

Love the fabric. Best advice? Read the directions over until you know what you are doing!!!!
It'd ok to make mistakes and to just stop worrying! I am very critical of my sewing skills and it sometimes prevents me from working on stuff!
I'm new, but so far, the best tip for me was to always test my thread tension on my sewing machine and have full bobbin ready to go when I'm quilting. Thanks for the giveaway! I love your blog!

to use a walking foot
Directly press the newly sewn stitches before pressing the seam into place and never use backward/forward ironing motion when setting seams

First tip I learned...is "Measure Twice (OR more....ask me HOW I knooow...lol) & Cut Once"
I already follow thru Bloglovin too :)
I still think the best tip is to measure twice, cut once. Saves a lot of heartache and headaches.
Using basting spray for those smaller quilts. It makes it so much easier to quilt wall-hangings!

To fix the little mistakes early, because by the end a bunch of small mistakes are compounded into a horrific mess that you can't fix.
To fix the little mistakes early, because by the end a bunch of small mistakes are compounded into a horrific mess that you can't fix.
Measure twice before cutting and also always prewash fabrics.
I'm not really a quilter, but I think what makes the biggest difference in my sewing (and I wouldn't be able to quilt without it) is pressing my seams
I don't think I've been quilting long enough to give tips. The only tip I follow, is if all else fails, look it up on YouTube. :)

Thanks for the giveaway!
I'd say to glue baste/pin the binding on the quilt. Makes everything go so speedily :)
I recently heard someone on a quilt show say that although we all make at least one mistake in our quilts or are not exactly pleased with every part of it - it is not necessary to tell people that!! So when you show someone your quilt just let them look at it and don't criticise yourself.

I saw a tip to line up points or intersections and sew a few stitches there first and then sew the blocks together. I haven't tried it yet but am really hoping it will improve my accuracy!
Best tip was to measure twice before cutting. It has saved me more times than I can say.
Starching my fabrics after I wash them! My cutting and piecing are much better since I started doing this!
Just do it! Don't sit around wanting to make something or wishing your sewing skills were better. Practice really does help.
Thanks :)
The best tip was about using a spray bottle of water instead of the steam options on my iron, works great and no funky water.
Love the hexagon bee fabric! Best quilting tip? Press, press, press. I use a spray bottle of water and a very hot iron.
The best tip I ever got about quilting was "Just do it!" I'd been saying for a while that I love quilts, and I'd like to give it a try, but just didn't know where to start. I ended up making a simple baby quilt, and loved it!
Measure twice before cutting;)
Press, don't iron (because you can stretch the fabric). I struggle with this because if I'm going to use an iron it is going to be ironed well!
jhunsberger (at) gmail (dot) com
best tip is sewing corner to corner and instead of marking each one, use a piece of cardboard matched up corner to corner and sew along the cardboard. Changed how I make flying geese for sure! Thanks for a giveaway!

My best tip is to nest your fabrics to get perfect intersections.
My best tip is to work with fabrics you enjoy! It will make the process a positive one, mistakes or not!
The best tip I've ever been given is to finish one quilt before starting another. If only I listened!
the woman who taught me how to quilt was insistent that fabrics be pressed before they are cut. it does make things a lot easier in the long run!
Prewash and iron fabrics before doing *any* sewing project. You think you might save time, but I'd hate to wash something, see it shrink or bleed. There'd be tears, and they'd be mine!

I was told early on to take a class from each teacher that came to our guild as I would learn something from each one. Thanks for participating in the Giveaway Day.

Best tip was to remember to put a new needle in the machine at the start of each project.

Best tip ever? Chain-piecing and rotary cutting. I whouldn't quilt any more without these techniques. Thanks for the chance!

The best advice or well eye opener for me was that I don't always have to pin a seam in order to sew it! The other was that most imperfections add beautiful character to quilts, being a perfectionist this is something I had to be taught! Crazy!
Glue basting my bindings was a great tip for me so I practiced and can put on a really great quilt binding.

To be precise when I cut! =)
Since I spend more time unsewing than I'd like to admit, I was especially grateful when someone taught me to rip every 3rd or 4th stitch and then pull from the other side. So much faster that way!
Best tip, enjoy yourself, quilting is fun.
The best advice I've received is to just relax and enjoy the process! Perfection is an unrealistic expectation!
Invest in the batting.
Thanks for the chance! For me, the best tip is to just keep practicing!
There are no quilt police. Unless you enter a contest that is. Thanks for chance to win.
Use quality fabric; you don't want to put in all that effort and have the quilt not last.
To press seams open unless a pattern states otherwise. It reduces bulk.
This is going to sound odd, but I am a hand quilter, and the best quilting advice I was given was that if you bleed on the quilt, you should spit on a ball of threads (you can use the extra ones lying around) and rub it on the spot. Trust me, it works. I haven't established if it has to be the bleeders spit, or if it can just be anybodies spit.
spray basting.. someone introduced me to it and I've loved it since.

Measure the middle of the quilt for your borders and ease them in.
I follow through google friends.
To alternate pressing seams so that they nest together - I have much better results with this than I do with pressing open.
Love these fabrics! My quilting tip would be to read a pattern all the way through before you start. I have not done this a couple of times, and had problems. Thanks for the chance to win!

The best tip about sewing was to always relax, that you were not in a race, and that sewing is to be enjoyed....So I always have a coffee, and music on and have some time just for myself.....

To iron first!! I'm horrible at being precise when sewing, and that just makes it even worse if I don't iron.
• • • Freezer paper is a great for quilting - no marks when you are done. Thank you for sharing!
Best quilting tip I got was "Just cut and sew!" - a friend pushed me when I was really waffling about if I wanted to take the plunge into quilting. :)
I think the most practical was always have a good seam ripper handy, because you will always need a seam ripper. Actually, I need a new one...
Can I still enter if I don't have a tip? I've only just started sewing rag quilts (migrated over after spending all my time sewing clothes for my daughter), so I'm all new to quilting and haven't gotten any tips yet!

My best quilting tips were to use sizing or starch, and lots of it, especially when making bias cuts or sewing triangles. Also, don't be so hard on yourself, you are the only person who will notice most of the mistakes.

Cut straight. Sew with a even seem. Its working so far.
I love that bee fabric. My number one tip is press your seams.
By far, the best tip I learned was about glue basting! Elmer's glue is my best friend!!!
Best tip- send out my queen size quilt to get quilted. Saved me a lot of stress.

i read an interesting one last month, where you can use 2 electronic levelers (think hardware store and hanging pictures) at a corner in your quilt to square it up easy. So you mark at the cross and cut with your rotary cutter. Thanks!
