I made a quilted jacket! Specifically, the <a href="https://shop.grainlinestudio.com/products/tamarack-jacket">Tamarack Jacket</a> by <a href="https://shop.grainlinestudio.com/">Grainline Studio</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bvv5zFKw5ew/WSEJ8lFXJTI/AAAAAAAAHuk/fMC5UNTJsDMwWUnYq3DFLg1yr-bVdLCrwCLcB/s1600/IMG_7748.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bvv5zFKw5ew/WSEJ8lFXJTI/AAAAAAAAHuk/fMC5UNTJsDMwWUnYq3DFLg1yr-bVdLCrwCLcB/s640/IMG_7748.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The exterior is a beautiful medium weight linen from <a href="http://www.thefabricstore.co.nz/">The Fabric Store</a> (pretty sure it's <a href="https://shop.thefabricstore.co.nz/collections/linen-milled-range/products/linen-navy?variant=16946870407">this one</a>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-itMWRH43kqg/WSEKPQXzUPI/AAAAAAAAHus/vNDQ5YEOnoUzwXJN-tc4X0YE2k4MpmWngCEw/s1600/IMG_7760.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-itMWRH43kqg/WSEKPQXzUPI/AAAAAAAAHus/vNDQ5YEOnoUzwXJN-tc4X0YE2k4MpmWngCEw/s640/IMG_7760.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used wool batting - the Quilter's Dream kind because it's lovely and doesn't smell like sheep. It's getting pretty cold here now so the wool should keep me snuggly and warm.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hk2fweDmIqk/WSEKB2JT3II/AAAAAAAAHuo/Rh2mfZtOUh0cplfn7I3hdIlh1HJzXumFACEw/s1600/IMG_7757.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hk2fweDmIqk/WSEKB2JT3II/AAAAAAAAHuo/Rh2mfZtOUh0cplfn7I3hdIlh1HJzXumFACEw/s640/IMG_7757.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the outside this jacket is very "I am a serious person walking a dog". On the inside it's much more "I'm a free spirit who makes her own clothes". That dreamy fabric is Nani Iro that I bought in Melbourne with <a href="http://www.erincharter.com/blog/">Erin</a> last year. It's pretty much impossible to find in this colourway, but the print is Komorebi if you want to try.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kx73I7emFZk/WSEKSezSMNI/AAAAAAAAHu0/44dAGnBtQ2IMRDZ7B8VvL5kmln7f030aQCEw/s1600/IMG_7766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kx73I7emFZk/WSEKSezSMNI/AAAAAAAAHu0/44dAGnBtQ2IMRDZ7B8VvL5kmln7f030aQCEw/s640/IMG_7766.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I could definitely fit more layers under this jacket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jT6oWPqbp9U/WSEJTUq3-XI/AAAAAAAAHt8/QTnRt1xPBVkY28zCTy0VAeEiSU5Tq68MgCEw/s1600/IMG_7687.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jT6oWPqbp9U/WSEJTUq3-XI/AAAAAAAAHt8/QTnRt1xPBVkY28zCTy0VAeEiSU5Tq68MgCEw/s640/IMG_7687.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a (US) size 4 based on my measurements. This is a size smaller than I expected to make, but it's definitely the right size for me (even though I used relatively lofty batting). I lengthened the body of the jacket by 1.5", and the sleeves by 1". I would lengthen them even more if I made this again - I just really didn't have enough of the lining fabric to do so this time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iqi5-BKkGjI/WSEJX_3BV5I/AAAAAAAAHuE/Stm3e4_3R9wzUg2XACRl4cieObeXGnKLgCEw/s1600/IMG_7688.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iqi5-BKkGjI/WSEJX_3BV5I/AAAAAAAAHuE/Stm3e4_3R9wzUg2XACRl4cieObeXGnKLgCEw/s640/IMG_7688.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished the binding on the front of the jacket and at the back hem by hand. The rest is all machine stitched, and I bound all the internal seams as well, for a really tidy finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2SFXsXb7HWk/WSEJgxdtjQI/AAAAAAAAHuM/PxapKhjkGCAc1ffsuP-MskS7Eu9SLtftQCEw/s1600/IMG_7692.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2SFXsXb7HWk/WSEJgxdtjQI/AAAAAAAAHuM/PxapKhjkGCAc1ffsuP-MskS7Eu9SLtftQCEw/s640/IMG_7692.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank goodness for sewing friends. Erin made this jacket at the same time as me (actually she decided to make it and I was like "me too!"). She made two practice pockets and walked me through the making of these welt pockets which were a bit intimidating for a first timer. In the end they were totally fine - use both the pattern instructions and the <a href="https://www.grainlinestudio.com/2016/11/29/tamarack-inserting-welt-pockets/">sew-along</a> for best results.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FSsPinL-tvI/WSEJVhlk_RI/AAAAAAAAHvI/3mvTLMDz8eUk-5KoQxm94mp9rr2kaReWQCEw/s1600/IMG_7680.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FSsPinL-tvI/WSEJVhlk_RI/AAAAAAAAHvI/3mvTLMDz8eUk-5KoQxm94mp9rr2kaReWQCEw/s640/IMG_7680.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut four versions of the "upper pocket"piece so that I could have the right side of fabric both inside the pocket and visible on the inside of the jacket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i6a4iHrHvx0/WSEJewBjmcI/AAAAAAAAHvI/m5NU4HuwnLwBhS5MtQM_odedNFt8XutuQCEw/s1600/IMG_7691.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i6a4iHrHvx0/WSEJewBjmcI/AAAAAAAAHvI/m5NU4HuwnLwBhS5MtQM_odedNFt8XutuQCEw/s640/IMG_7691.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have quite enough of the Komorebi print so I used a different Nani Iro print for the inside of the pockets. I squeezed the lining out of about 1.5m of Nani Iro which is definitely less than the recommended amount. Don't try this at home kids.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vP229ZxGbUk/WSEKeOqdByI/AAAAAAAAHvI/0vAGZSU6E9QqNwL4Ac06kkI3v8JqNqcAwCEw/s1600/IMG_7771.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vP229ZxGbUk/WSEKeOqdByI/AAAAAAAAHvI/0vAGZSU6E9QqNwL4Ac06kkI3v8JqNqcAwCEw/s640/IMG_7771.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilting is Aurifil 28 weight thread. I guess I thought that if I was going to make a quilted jacket, I wanted to see the quilting. I used a medium blue on the outside and a medium grey on the inside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DCSAudEaalc/WSEKQUiVl-I/AAAAAAAAHvI/PhZMeQdcIoofJ5wjPq6WmtWhj_cBsYMfwCEw/s1600/IMG_7769.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DCSAudEaalc/WSEKQUiVl-I/AAAAAAAAHvI/PhZMeQdcIoofJ5wjPq6WmtWhj_cBsYMfwCEw/s640/IMG_7769.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Yeah these photos are just gratuitous now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If it wasn't for the fact that this limey green makes me look like a corpse, I would be tempted to wear this jacket inside out.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b5-37dvvYgY/WLuVklwRDiI/AAAAAAAAHqo/pLiQMu_2JwQUXVZa6fGP5WOl1_bcA-VlACLcB/s1600/IMG_7173.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b5-37dvvYgY/WLuVklwRDiI/AAAAAAAAHqo/pLiQMu_2JwQUXVZa6fGP5WOl1_bcA-VlACLcB/s400/IMG_7173.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have already collected enough blocks for about 7 quilts, which is amazing. I've also been given pre-made binding for many more, for which I'm very grateful - it cuts down the time it takes to pull together a complete quilt substantially. In fact, I think I have so much binding now that I probably don't need any more at this time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The two quilts in this post are the ones I have already assembled from the blocks sent in by lovely kind internet friends, and collected from the generous members of <a href="http://capitalquilters.blogspot.co.nz/">Capital Quilters</a>. However, I reckon there are still orphan blocks floating around out there that would just love to find their way into a quilt for a child in need.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yC-T-kxhrJc/WLuViu03L6I/AAAAAAAAHqk/WyBwS7M9l9g6bDvq4RQ1vZMZicbt4RNmwCLcB/s1600/IMG_7285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yC-T-kxhrJc/WLuViu03L6I/AAAAAAAAHqk/WyBwS7M9l9g6bDvq4RQ1vZMZicbt4RNmwCLcB/s400/IMG_7285.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
If you would like to contribute, send me an email or a direct message on Instagram, and I'll send you my address for posting. If you want to share your blocks on Instagram, use the tag #arohanuiquilts and I'll be able to track them down. I have two sets of instructions - <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_5wohxbLYpwTEg3OFZBbEFuNTA/view?usp=sharing">this one with a very basic QAYG block design</a>, or <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_5wohxbLYpwdGppWHJfYXVMRDg/view?usp=sharing">this one with a more complex QAYG design</a>. Of course, you can use your orphan blocks or any other QAYG design you like - all the information is in the instructions.<br />
<br />
Finally, if you don't have time before 1 April 2017, or you're in a location that makes sending blocks to New Zealand prohibitively expensive, please consider contributing QAYG blocks to Alison's Soy Amado Quilts project. You can find all the information <a href="http://littleislandquilting.blogspot.co.nz/p/giving-back.html">here</a>.Adrianne @ On the Windy Sidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03259356674983165185noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897344944533518603.post-84924741662104771422017-01-31T10:00:00.000+13:002017-01-31T10:00:03.333+13:00A Quilter's Pantry Block for the Honey Pot Bee<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">

Many of you will be familiar with the <a href="http://littleislandquilting.blogspot.co.nz/p/giving-back.html">Soy Amado Quilts project</a> that Alison from <a href="http://littleislandquilting.blogspot.co.nz/">Little Island Quilting</a> has been running since 2014 (she's up to over 100 quilts made and donated to kids in Mexico and South Africa). At the end of last year I quilted up a bunch of blocks from one of my earliest quilt projects and sent them off to Alison.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Some of the blocks I sent to Alison</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I decided that I want to do some good locally as well. I run the block of the month programme for my local guild, Capital Quilters, and for the first two months of 2017, instead of the usual format, I'm asking members to make QAYG blocks and donate them so that I can assemble them into quilts for Kiwi kids. I am planning to donate the completed quilts through the Aotearoa Quilters Cosy Kiwi Kids programme - at the moment they are providing quilts to families with children in Kaikoura and earthquake affected areas.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I thought that some other Kiwi quilters might like to contribute blocks as well - they're really fun to make, you can use up batting scraps, and you'll feel good! It's also a heck of a lot cheaper to send blocks within New Zealand than from New Zealand to Guernsey!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br />At the moment I'm looking to have all blocks with me by the end of March 2017, so that I can assemble all the quilts and send them off before winter. I'll let you know if I change my mind and decide to run an ongoing project like Alison though.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;">If you would like to contribute, you can download my instructions by clicking <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_5wohxbLYpwTEg3OFZBbEFuNTA/view?usp=sharing">here</a>. Send me an email or a direct message on Instagram, and I'll send you my address for posting. If you want to share your blocks on Instagram, use the tag #arohanuiquilts and I'll be able to track them down.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Finally, if you don't have time in the first two months of the year, or you're in a location that makes sending blocks to New Zealand prohibitively expensive, please consider contributing QAYG blocks to Alison's Soy Amado Quilts project. You can find all the information <a href="http://littleislandquilting.blogspot.co.nz/p/giving-back.html">here</a>.</span></span><br />

It's very hard for me to resist choosing fabrics, even if I'm only doing so virtually! These ones are from <a href="https://www.theloopyewe.com/fabric-shop">The Loopy Ewe</a>. Coincidentally, there is a fabric shop near Wellington called the Krazy Cow - the people who named these two shops must have been on the same wavelength!Adrianne @ On the Windy Sidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03259356674983165185noreply@blogger.com53tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897344944533518603.post-33356029531820664462017-01-10T18:00:00.000+13:002017-01-10T18:00:04.959+13:00Block Pattern - Spring ChickensFor the last 18 months or so, I've been designing the block of the month for my local guild, <a href="http://capitalquilters.blogspot.co.nz/">Capital Quilters</a>. I keep thinking that I really should share the block patterns here, but have never gotten around to it. To be fair, I haven't gotten around to much blogging at all lately. Anyway, here we are! I'm starting off with Spring Chickens, which is the most recent block I designed. Of course, you can change up the colours to suit yourself, but I have left my original colour instructions for the guild.<br />
<br />
Here is the link to download a pdf with the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_5wohxbLYpwY0tzcThQNkk4Y28/view?usp=sharing">chicken templates</a>. Please note, when printing, you must use the "Actual Size" or 100% scale setting, NOT the "Fit" setting.<br />
<br />
I really love the idea of my own free range flock of chickens, and fresh eggs every day. My current house isn’t really suitable though, so for the meantime, these gals will have to do. The point here is to choose fabrics that in no way resemble the actual colouring of a chicken - a medium to large scale multi coloured print for the body, with more intense brights for the wing and comb and dark for the legs so that they stand out from the background. For the background, choose a blue-grey fabric, something a little on the dull side, and with enough contrast to your chook body that you see the outline clearly.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span id="docs-internal-guid-8bc74134-85dd-b853-9a7a-b726c440d3e5"><img alt="FullSizeRender.jpg" height="400" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7nHyV19RNoSSn4_NOF_2L-5nhlsaa8M2_kM-YUKR9X7-1Z03-13WL7WzdqP-8hXCM_2B2y_3KZvp4KMUicEWaQt1yQ3SpMerTu0LF6KksFCh63f2VRvSqZjizC-5e4L825Nha-so" style="border: none; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="400" /></span></div>
<br />
<b>Fabric and cutting </b><br />
For this block, you need:<br />
- a 9 ½” square of a light or medium fabric that reads blue-grey<br />
- multicoloured light or bright scrap for chook body<br />
- small bright scraps for wing and comb - this will be more effective if the fabric reads as a single colour<br />
- small dark scraps for legs - this will be more effective if the fabric reads as a single colour<br />
- fusible webbing (steam-a-seam, vliesofix, softfuse, etc)<br />
<br />
<b>Preparation</b><br />
<br />
Trace the chook body, wing, comb and two leg pieces onto the back side of your fusible webbing. Cut out, leaving some extra room around the shapes. Fuse the fusible webbing onto the WRONG SIDE of your chosen fabrics. Carefully cut out the chicken shapes on the line you have traced.
<br />
<br />
<b>Assembly</b><br />
Cut a 9 ½” square from your blue-grey background fabric.
Lay the pieces out on your background square. Make sure there is at least ¾” between the lowest part of the feet and the edge of the background fabric. The chicken body should cover the top of the legs and the bottom edge of the comb, so that you only need to sew around the uncovered edges. Once you are happy with the position of all the shapes, fuse in place.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="IMG_5772.JPG" height="200" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/AA6wKA7mK4OOJo1kdZDvBfvHLOkzUymHrQapRRYhJmVgiMmv36lSxURlOgKIaZ4d4Rc1Ecrv07Zd1eQVc7rzuVeVu9O8u2VaVt0ClvY9cvRcOW38Ld7-upL0K7hKOSqk1h5oqhcL" style="border: none; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="200" /><img alt="IMG_5773.JPG" height="200" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/oqYIgFTG3mfi6-IvEAnuCT-yptwi-Ix9WgByF2PhHM2FLGMnyoeVj5MI2-Vz9dts0-8SwWJ4v7KQ4UO05A9AJaeG6W6OOqvObDvsGovq-kZzBYHH4b12Q-q4ELty0kY6hhaUymAk" style="border: none; font-size: 13.3333px; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="200" /><img alt="IMG_5774.JPG" height="200" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/XUWcskykRyN89OvJotWZ-sbM7ZC2BLmO1a6qgaITySOxzIXN9g0AIoDSC1iezkI30m4JksPWRLNLnUVUmIpGIyG2wSnr_d_GADzJ3az7m5hlb1z_S8PpC6JnOdQSC546jOre0xPr" style="border: none; font-size: 13.3333px; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="200" /></div>
<br />
Using your sewing machine, blanket stitch or zigzag stitch around the chicken shapes to secure them to the background fabric. Use a thread to match your applique shapes (you might have to change colour for the different elements), or an invisible thread.<br />
<br />
The block should finish at 9 ½” square.<br />
<br />
If you follow me on instagram (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/adrianneonthewindyside/">@adrianneonthewindyside</a>), you will see that I have started my own quilt with blocks that are similar to these, but set on point. I am super lucky to already have a Sew Together Bag, made for me by my friend <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ihaveafabricproblem/">Anne</a> (featuring cats, of course). Anne has made lots of these bags, and has become sort of a guru. A couple of weeks ago, I watched her walk another friend, <a href="http://wendysquiltsandmore.blogspot.co.nz/">Wendy</a>, through the process for making one, and realised that it didn't seem so hard after all (you can see Wendy's bag <a href="http://wendysquiltsandmore.blogspot.co.nz/2016/07/my-sew-together-bag.html">here</a>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P0rUcASNXhE/V5BV6PREQkI/AAAAAAAAHZs/kUjrK6i9_nUXRbofAKLczVqCAm3T3H8UgCLcB/s1600/IMG_4841.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img alt="sew together bag" border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P0rUcASNXhE/V5BV6PREQkI/AAAAAAAAHZs/kUjrK6i9_nUXRbofAKLczVqCAm3T3H8UgCLcB/s400/IMG_4841.JPG" title="sew together bag" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went to Craftsy to buy <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/sew-together-bag/36309">the pattern</a>, and found that I had already bought it! So I definitely had to try my hand at making one myself. When I went to buy zips, I found myself immediately drawn to the peach zips, and knew I had to use some of my peachy fabrics in this bag.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zrim6o7Kq-Y/V5BV56N54mI/AAAAAAAAHZo/YGI778eDgxASynuDDcwbbaplhSC_BRxMACLcB/s1600/IMG_4848.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="sew together bag" border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zrim6o7Kq-Y/V5BV56N54mI/AAAAAAAAHZo/YGI778eDgxASynuDDcwbbaplhSC_BRxMACLcB/s400/IMG_4848.JPG" title="sew together bag" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The good thing about the Sew Together Bag is that lots have been made already, so you can do a lot of google or instagram stalking to see which ones you like, and the different things that people have done that work for you.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't use the maximum possible number of different fabrics for this bag, because I like the slightly more controlled look that fewer fabrics give. The interior fabrics are a mix of Lizzy House, Carolyn Friedlander, Heather Ross, Umbrella Prints and Sarah Watts prints, and the exterior is Carolyn Friedlander (binding and side panel) and Jay McCarroll (the main fabric).</div>

I worked from both the pattern instructions (which are rather lacking in pictures), and the excellent <a href="http://quiltbarn.blogspot.co.nz/2014/03/sew-long.html">Quilt Barn sew-along</a>. My tips for this pattern are to go slow, step by step, be prepared to change your thread colour lots (and have different colours in the top thread and the bobbin as required), and cut a second bag at the same time you cut your first (because it's that addictive). It's definitely fiddly, but satisfyingly so!Adrianne @ On the Windy Sidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03259356674983165185noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897344944533518603.post-85129153191432102692016-05-09T16:41:00.000+12:002016-05-09T16:41:25.395+12:00Garden for Birds - Rainbow version<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hello! After a bit of a hiatus, I'm back! I'm hoping to start posting with more regularity again, but, we'll see...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway, this quilt has been finished for a while, but I haven't previously found the motivation to post about it. It's the third quilt I've made from this pattern (my own). This is <a href="http://www.onthewindyside.co.nz/2013/10/garden-for-birds-quilt-finished.html">the original Garden for Birds Quilt</a> and this is the <a href="http://www.onthewindyside.co.nz/2014/06/garden-for-birds-2.html">Garden for Birds Quilt 2</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I made this one over the course of last year as I taught this quilt pattern for the second time. It was nice to sew along with my students (although all my stitching was done outside class time, of course).</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/onthewindyside/23388982545/in/dateposted/" title="Garden for Birds 3"><img alt="Garden for Birds 3" height="500" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/643/23388982545_27a345b852.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
This time I went back to something slightly more along the line of my original quilt, with rainbow colours and a low volume background. A little black sneaked in as well, since I was going high contrast with this quilt.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Simple quilting seemed to be the way to go, so I quilted a large scale meander design over the whole quilt, choosing Aurifil in my favourite colour, 2021. To make the quilting stand out a little more, I went with a 40 weight thread instead of my usual 50 weight thread - its still subtle but just that bit heavier.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/onthewindyside/22761796393/in/photostream/" title="Garden for Birds 3"><img alt="Garden for Birds 3" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5822/22761796393_24613d7724.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
My stash is pretty out of control, so I have been trying to make quilt backs from fabrics in my stash rather than buying yardage for quilt backs. Sticking with the rainbow theme, I used a selection of cheerful prints for the back of this quilt, which I rather like.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm about to start teaching this class again for the third time. Every year, my students come up with fabulous and different interpretations of the pattern - I'm excited to see this year's batch of quilts!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's still Saturday somewhere..? We had a lovely, docile dog visitor last weekend that I personally very much enjoyed. Ralph did not feel the same way and spent the day hiding and dribbling and being cross. Ivy was much braver and tried to investigate the visitor but didn't appreciate the way the dog wagged his tail every time she got near it. </div>

If you are truly dedicated to style, you will match your carpet to your cat. <span style="font-size: x-small;">Mojo</span></div>

He looks a bit surprised at this result but what's more important than cat-carpet fashion? Ralph and Ivy aren't so lucky though Ivy certainly seems to appreciate it when I wear all black just like her. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ivy has an unintentional mean face, she's very sweet and small but when she squints and sticks her nose up she looks like she's gonna beat you up. Ralph doesn't seem to have inherited this trait even though they're siblings. Though maybe he's just such a chicken that it always shows on his face.</div>

Hello from the other side. <span style="font-size: x-small;">Ralph and Ivy</span></div>
<br />
I'm sorry if I just got Adele stuck in your head.<br />
Adrianne got a new bed a while ago and before the old bed found a new home there were too many beds in one bedroom and the cats quickly discovered that a bed is very good for climbing. This is probably one of the greatest days/nights of Ralph and Ivy's lives and one of the most alarming for Adrianne and I.<br />
Also, the boxes they're sitting in remind me of the Brady Bunch intro but we need WAY more cats.<br />

I hope you've had a productive quarter and I can't wait to check out what you've been making.<br />
<br />
Here is a quick reminder of the rules:<br />
<br />
<b>The Rules:</b><br />
<br />
- At the start of each quarter there will be a linky party for you to link up your proposed list of finishes. You must link up in order to be able to be eligible for those prizes at the end. <b>Please only enter ONE blog post or flickr photo or instagram photo at this starting link-up.</b><br />
<br />
- In order for your projects to be eligible, they must at least be a tangible project at the start of the quarter. That means, at the very least, a pile of fabric pulled along with a pattern, or a quilt top needing to be quilted, or a half knit jumper. I love seeing your bee blocks, but they won't count unless you happen to be turning them all into a fully completed quilt!<br />
<br />
- As you complete each of your projects on your list, write a post all about it, or a description of a Flickr pic.<br />
<br />
- At the end of the quarter, link up <b>each individual post/Flickr pic</b> (please link back to your original list in some way). For each finish/link you complete, you get an entry into the draw, and therefore it's in your best interest to write up a separate post for each!<br />
<br />
- A finish is defined as a completely finished project, eg a quilt, quilted and bound, a bag that's fully lined and functional, or a jumper that one could wear out in public. I'm happy for you if you get a quilt top completed in one quarter, but hold onto it for the next quarter and see if you can get it quilted and bound before entering please.<br />
<br />
- You won't be punished if you don't finish your entire list, so feel free to make a big list and roll projects over from one quarter to the next if you need to.<br />
<br />
- All qualifying finishes will be put into a prize draw, and the names drawn at random for each of the prizes donated by our sponsors for that quarter.<br />
<br />
- The finish link party will be open for a week, and then the next quarter will open on the following day.<br />
<br />
- During the week that the finish link party is open, there will be a series of tutorials appearing here on the blog. If you'd like to contribute a tutorial, please drop me an e-mail at adrianneonthewindyside at gmail dot com.<br />
<br />
- The FAL is open to anyone, anywhere in the world.<br />
<br />
I'd love if you'd spread the word about the FAL by popping my button in your post or on your blog. You can grab the code for a large button or a small button below:<br />

So, start linking up. The linky party closes on 6 January at <b>11:00 p.m. PST</b> - if you're in a different time zone, please check and make sure you know what time that is in your part of the world so you don't miss the close. <a href="http://www.worldtimebuddy.com/">World Time Buddy</a> is my favourite time converter. I'll remind you closer to the closing time.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Please make sure you link up a separate post for each finish. If you need a refresher on how to link up, Katy from The Littlest Thistle did a post which explains how to use the link-up tool really well - you can find it <a href="http://www.the-littlest-thistle.com/2014/10/finish-along-quarter-3-tutorial-week_1.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>Using instagram to link up</b></div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you're planning to use instagram to link up, Katy from The Littlest Thistle has done another tutorial on how to link from instagram using your computer (<a href="http://www.the-littlest-thistle.com/2015/01/finish-along-quarter-4-tutorial-week_3.html">here</a>). If you are working on your phone or your tablet, Rhonda's tutorial on how to link from instagram (<a href="http://www.quilterinthegap.com/2014/12/finish-a-long-ig-a-simple-tutorial/">here</a>) is for you.<br />
<br />
<b>How to delete your own links</b><br />
<br />
If you add a link with an error or that wasn't on your original list and you want to delete it, you can do this yourself. Hover your mouse over the thumbnail image of the link you want to delete, and a grey bar will appear at the bottom of the image. On the right hand side, there will be a small rubbish bin / trash can icon - click on that to delete your link. You can only delete your own links and it generally works best if you delete a link using the same device you used to add the link. If for some reason, this is not working for you, let me know and I will delete the link for you - but please have a try at deleting it yourself first!</div>

We had seen the Anna Maria Horner swap being organised on Instagram but wanted a longer deadline (as it happens, this was a good idea because it took us the best part of a year to get organised!).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kAUeNaG88g4/Vn7t7nuQPWI/AAAAAAAAHQ4/DlSmXK-fgE4/s640/blogger-image-1653588831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kAUeNaG88g4/Vn7t7nuQPWI/AAAAAAAAHQ4/DlSmXK-fgE4/s640/blogger-image-1653588831.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This mini quilt is what I created for Anne. Her favourite colour is grey, and I knew I wanted to get lots of different AMH fabrics into the quilt. About halfway through the year I learned how to make yoyos / Suffolk puffs and I wanted to incorporate them into a quilt that was modern and a bit different. Thus the idea of this round mini quilt was born.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gsqkF2R3fTc/Vn7t91HkaPI/AAAAAAAAHRA/KQXUj17mweA/s640/blogger-image-758322040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gsqkF2R3fTc/Vn7t91HkaPI/AAAAAAAAHRA/KQXUj17mweA/s640/blogger-image-758322040.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">First I made many yoyos using a wide range of different AMH fabrics collected over the years. For the detail people, I used a Clover yoyo maker in size large (45mm). I arranged them in a rainbow-ish way, in a large hexagon shape.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y-PAAUjIIx8/Vn7uAfZOxJI/AAAAAAAAHRI/ZCvYIPMGcWc/s640/blogger-image-1610458955.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y-PAAUjIIx8/Vn7uAfZOxJI/AAAAAAAAHRI/ZCvYIPMGcWc/s640/blogger-image-1610458955.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Then I created the background by quilting a solid grey fabric with grey thread (I used a rayon thread on the top because I wanted a bit of shine, and trusty aurifil on the back). The grid is reasonably dense, spaced about 1/2" apart, but was freehand quilted using my walking foot (no marking lines!). Once the quilted part was done, I hand stitched the yoyos to the background, just catching the top layer of fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c6gtThpXO2Q/Vn7uCiKMRxI/AAAAAAAAHRQ/4KVooe9RO4w/s640/blogger-image--519817660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c6gtThpXO2Q/Vn7uCiKMRxI/AAAAAAAAHRQ/4KVooe9RO4w/s640/blogger-image--519817660.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The fabric on the back of the quilt is another AMH design, which I had stashed for a while. I added a wee hanging sleeve and even got a batten cut to the right size and added a hanging loop for easy display.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8S_1U7A6O48/Vn7t5qltKCI/AAAAAAAAHQw/WZTRYRmWx6c/s640/blogger-image-599536094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8S_1U7A6O48/Vn7t5qltKCI/AAAAAAAAHQw/WZTRYRmWx6c/s640/blogger-image-599536094.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Finally, my fairly tongue-in-cheek name for the quilt, and a label. This was a really fun little quilt to make and it definitely hasn't cured my yoyo addiction!</div><br></div><br></div>Adrianne @ On the Windy Sidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03259356674983165185noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897344944533518603.post-52147162719066094582015-12-26T08:00:00.000+13:002015-12-26T08:00:04.911+13:00Christmas Caturday!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was time to take another Christmas Photo and it went about as well as <a href="http://www.onthewindyside.co.nz/2014/12/merry-christmas.html">last year.</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Didn't quite get the shot before Ivy decided to leave</div>
