Firecrackers Quilt - a Fat Quarter Shop pattern

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR ENTRIES - THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

Today, I'm delighted to be sharing my version of Fat Quarter Shop's newest quilt pattern, the Firecrackers Quilt!

If you're interested in making this quilt yourself, all the resources you need are right here:

Firecrackers quilt

This quilt uses two jelly rolls, and a background fabric.  I was super lucky and managed to get my hands on not one but two fabric collections I've been jonesing for - Modern Background Paper and Modern Background Ink.  Although these fabrics have been designed as backgrounds, I wanted them to be the stars of my quilt, and chose Moda Grunge in Duchess for my background.

Firecrackers quilt

I'm really pleased with how this quilt top has turned out.  I really liked the angles in the pattern design, and I wanted to keep the graphic nature of the quilt with my fabric choices.  I think the black, white and grey achieves that perfectly.

Firecrackers quilt

I had a nice time making this quilt - there are a few steps to it but they are all pretty simple and perfect for doing while watching a TV show or listening to a podcast (lately I've been listening to and really enjoying Reply All).  If you're going to make this quilt, I totally recommend this rotating cutting mat for the trimming stage.  I actually bought one when I was holidaying in Auckland last year.  I was making a quilt with lots of half square triangles, and I forgot to take my other rotating cutting mat with me.  I found the Matilda's Own one in a shop up there and I haven't looked back since - it's that good.

Firecrackers quilt

I really like the subtle texture of the Moda Grunge fabrics.  I have a few stashed but I think this is the first time I've actually used one! It has reminded me why I stashed them in the first place!

Firecrackers quilt

It was a pretty windy day when I took these photos - it always makes photographing a quilt top challenging!  Here is my tip for anyone making this quilt: once you have finished assembling the quilt top, stitch a line about 1/8" from each edge of the quilt.  This will help keep the edge stable and prevent it from stretching.

I can't wait to see the quilts made by the other bloggers who made quilts from the Firecrackers pattern!  You can find the other quilts here:

Ants to Sugar by Daisy
Silly Mama Quilts by Brooke
Happy Quilting by Melissa
627 Handworks by Julie
Must Love Quilts by Corinne
Mommy Sew by Jenn
Fly Away Quilts by Lauren

One of the things I really enjoyed about making the Firecrackers Quilt was the opportunity to use the Creative Grids 30 Degree Triangle Ruler for the first time.  I'm already a big fan of 60 degree triangles, and the 18 degree wedges that are typically used for making Dresden plates, and this ruler hits the gap in between perfectly!  I've already started a little project using some of the 30 degree triangle scraps from this quilt, which I hope to share with you soon.

Fat Quarter Shop is very generously letting me give away a Creative Grids 30 Degree Triangle Ruler to one lucky reader.

  18. I cannot work without my 6.5 x 24.5 ruller - that half inch side is so important. I have a 6 x 12 and while it works for a lot of small cuts, I miss the 1/2 inch side.

  20. Love Moda Grunge - subtle but adds some great depth. My favourite ruler is my Omnigrid 6x24. I really need to branch out and try some non rectangular rulers :) I'm also a big fan of wonderclips from Clover. They rock!

  23. Hi! My favorite ruler is Shape Cut by June Tailor. I love that you reduces the amount of time you spend on cutting those pesky strips.
Unfortunately my ruler is one of the first ones that came out and is on the smaller size. I recently saw that Creative Grids came out with a 14 x 2o" version and I think I'll be investing in that sooner than later.

  24. I haven't used any specialty rulers yet-but live my basic ruler that I use with my cutting mat and rotary cutter-mine has a little lip on it that helps keep it straight while cutting!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I LOVE Creative Grids rulers because of the textured grippy stuff. I haven't tried this one, but would love to!

  27. I mostly use my plain old 2 inch ruler, but I do like the Fons & Porter 1/4 inch for 1/2 square triangles. I hold it in the middle and draw the 1/4 inch lines on either side, sew, then cut between. Thanks.

  28. I don't have many rulers, but my favorite one is a 12 1/2' square up ruler. Thanks!

  30. My favourite tool is my Big cutting mat. I started out with a smaller one from Spotlight, but took advantage of a sale to size up. It takes up an inordinate amount of room, but I can have pieces laid out, and still cut large fabric pieces alongside. Thanks for the giveaway. Tarnia.hodges at gmail.com

  43. I love your quilt. I'm kind of surprised how much I like the pink and grey and the grunge adds that nice softness. I have some stashed too, which I do have a plan for-one day! I'm not a big gadget person, just stick to the ruler and mat, but would love to win a triangle ruler!

  44. A very small hook crochet hook, yes for quilting. It can be used to grab lint, tie a knot, pull thread from the needle on the sewing machine, turn corners, etc. 24Tangent@gmail.com

  45. HQMelissa made one of these too, but I don't think she had a giveaway. I don't think I haven a favorite fancy quilting tool. I have cool, fancy yarn spinning tools (my drum carder, woah!) but quilting hasn't been as big of a thing yet. Oh, my husband did make me a stand for my quilt frame. It is rad.

  60. Yours is lovely! When I saw the first picture I thought it had a white background and the piecing was icy blues - isn't it funny what colours can do to each other? I think the fact the I expected the background to be white played a part too.

I really like my big square ruler! It's such a hassle to cut squares with the mat markings and a long ruler. I'd love a 60degree triangle ruler though, those are even harder to get right!
